The former Juventus captain got the UEFA Pro license. Don Fabio trained him in black and white from 2004 to 2006: “I like to think that all my guys from the time then took something from me”
Alessandro Del Piero could only be the last of a long row. The former captain (deliberately with Juventus’s “C”) obtained, in fact, the other day the UEFA Pro license. Fabio Capello trained Pinturicchio at Juventus from 2004 to 2006. And of the team of that two -year period, fifteen players have already undertaken – and in some cases a little coaching career. From Tudor to Vieira, only to cite two technicians of the current Serie A. “I like to think that all my boys from then took a little bit also from me. As I did from Herrera, Liedholm and Fabbri,” says Don Fabio.
Even from Ale, do you expect it to bring his teachings with him?
“Well, I must say that there was a period with me in which Del Piero played little. As a great professional, however, he has always trained to the maximum, even if obviously he has not agreed. Here, as happened to all the former players, if one day he will sit on a bench he will notice what it means to have to take unpopular decisions (laughs ed)”.
Let’s admit that he makes Piero feel like hearing on the bench …
“We had an exceptional attack: Ibrahimovic, Trezeguet, but also Mutu … Here, the recovery of the Romanian talent was the most important of my coaching career. He arrived for six months in which he had never trained and almost never even knew how to kick …”.
Let’s go back to Del Piero, if he imagined him coach 20 years ago?
“Yes, because he has always been intelligent. He obviously has personalities, he knows how to speak excellent English. And it is not a guy who is in a hurry. Once he stopped playing he did not immediately dive into a new career: he advertised, he is also a commentator. Always with class, sobriety and professionalism, he is so in all he does”.
What would you recommend at the beginning of the new adventure?
“Just not to be in a hurry. Not to burn the stages, perhaps start from the youth sector and go up to degrees. Take Pirlo: the path that had been outlined, with Juventus under 23 as the first stop, was correct. Then he found himself catapulted into the first team even before starting and, despite having won two trophies, they sent him away. But alleviato is another profession, he serves time to learn, mature experience. Champions, they are led to think with “I”, as a technician you have to think only with “us” “.
Have you already had to tell him?
“I tell you the truth, I crossed Alessandro by train two days before his exam in Coverciano (laughs ed). And we talked a little …”.
The news of the coach’s license to Del Piero has led many Juventus fans to already dream of a future on the Juve bench … just take a tour of social media.
“Here, I understand the suggestion, but when I say I am not in a hurry I mean to avoid premature easy temptations. A technician forms over time, slowly putting together a reliable and first level staff. And here I have another advice: you must not surround yourself with” Yes Man “, but of precious collaborators full of ideas”.
Someone claims that to be great coaches you need to have been a midfielder before. Looking at Guardiola or Conte, it comes to think is true. Del Piero was however a “10”, then a second tip …
“It is an old sentence of mine, who has also been copied by others (laughs editor’s note). Of course, having played in the median helps, because as a footballer he obliges you to deeper tactical readings than the other roles. But it will mean that Alessandro will arrest his range of action once on the bench: he is intelligent, perhaps he will only need a little more time, but I am sure he can do it”.
