Germany and the Netherlands are starting a joint regulation (tender) this year to initiate the import of renewable hydrogen to Northwest Europe. Minister Hermans announced this today on the World Hydrogen Summit In Rotterdam.

It is unique that two countries work together in this way and is therefore an important first step in European cooperation in the import of sustainable hydrogen. Sustainable hydrogen will play an important role in the energy transition. In addition to the own production of sustainable hydrogen in the Netherlands, imports will also be needed. With this scheme, Germany and the Netherlands want to initiate this import.

Producers of sustainable hydrogen can register on the tender worldwide. Companies in the Netherlands and Germany then decrease the imported renewable hydrogen to use for their business processes. This makes imports easier and ensures that the producers of sustainable hydrogen have certainty.

H2Global is a public-private partnership in which in addition to the German Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy, a large number of companies from the energy sector also participate. Germany took the initiative for this in 2021 because the import of hydrogen is not yet available at commercially attractive prices. The Netherlands thinks H2Global is a good interpretation of the Dutch import policy of renewable hydrogen because of the importance of importing the security of supply of the energy and raw material system.

The Netherlands and Germany each make € 300 million available for the joint tender. The German organization Hintco will carry out the tender.
