On Monday evening, 80,000 fans celebrated the double promotion of HSV men and women in the Bundesliga in downtown Hamburg. Politicians honored the particular importance of the club for the Hanseatic city. The supporters were pushing around the coveted places in front of the town hall.
“HSV, HSV, HSV”, it echoed over the town hall market. In addition, Tina Turner’s classic “Simply the Best” sounded from the speakers. Some of the approximately 40,000 fans of the promoted team, which were on the square in front of the Hamburg citizens, lit pyrotechnics, so that even the adjacent fine shopping streets such as the new wall sank in the fog for a short time.
At the top of the town hall balcony, climbing coach Merlin Polzin clumsy the fist and beamed all over the face. For the native of Hamburg, who used to be a fan in the north curve of the Volksparkstadion, it was moving moments. Especially when “Merlin, Merlin, Merlin” calls were voted. What a day for the young coach. And what a party in the heart of the Hanseatic city.
According to the police, 80,000 fans were poured into the city center, 40,000 had gathered on the town hall market – more were not allowed there. The square was cordoned off with bars and fences on the festive day. It continued on the Inner Alster, where the teams were on the road with event trucks and present themselves to their followers for the soundtrack of booming bass.
Tschentscher recognizes great importance of the HSV for the city
Hamburg’s first mayor Peter Tschentscher had previously received the promotion teams in the town hall. With the words: “The Dino is back”, the SPD politician began his emotional speech and thus caused great jubilation in the ballroom.
“If you have the diamond in your heart, you have Hamburg in your heart.”
– Hamburg’s first mayor Peter Tschentscher
The 59-year-old emphasized that the HSV is much more for many people than just a club. “When tens of thousands gather on the Alster to celebrate their club, this shows that today it is not about a usual celebration of a promoted team from the second to the first division. It is about the rise of a special club in a special city. The rise of a proud and traditional club and about millions of people who have been carrying the diamond in their heart for generations,” said Tschetscher.
The mayor, who, after the 6-1 success of the HSV men against SSV 1846 Ulm and the associated early rise, celebrated with the players in the Volkspark Stadium, but also briefly followed quiet, thoughtful tones when he thought of the HSV icon Uwe Seeler, who died three years ago.
“The king of the diamond carriers would have been the happiest today. Hamburg did not give up, he once said, even if he was sometimes desperate and would have loved to go back to the pitch himself,” said Tschentscher about the Honorary citizen.
Polzin promises the Bundesliga a “new HSV”
After the mayor, Polzin spoke. The just 34-year-old football teacher explained with brilliant eyes that it was “a privilege” for him and his assistant coach Loïc Favé to have become a native of Hamburg with HSV.
And with a view to the new season, Polzin promised: “The Bundesliga should experience a new HSV, one other than the one that it said goodbye seven years ago. An HSV with maximum claim, the necessary humility, respect for the task and always with courage and a realistic look at the situation. We will continue to work hard for that.”
Interior Senator Grote: “The HSV made the city proud”
The trainer spoke about the years of the traditional decline of the traditional club, which in 2018 finally led to the first descent in the club history. Misory at all levels and partly inappropriate arrogance had led to the HSV lost nationwide to reputation nationwide. When the former football heavyweight did not make it to repair the “operating accident” quickly and mutated from the former federal to the second division “Dino”, the HSV continued to lose weight.
But the club was always able to rely on one thing in the most difficult times in its history: the fans. In the Senator Andy Grote in his speech, the tight band between the club and the appendix.
“This climb does something with the Hamburgers. No club stands as much for the whole city as the Hamburg sports club. Perhaps it feels like so many people as if they themselves got up.
HSV captain Stöckmann in speech close to tears
Tschenscher and Grote also recognized the rise of HSV soccer players. The mayor once again pointed out that the team made it from the regional league to the Bundesliga within three years: “What a performance.”
The outgoing captain Sarah Stöckmann was visibly touched in front of the speeches and the atmosphere in the ballroom. “There are days that you never forget. And today there is such a day. We have done something that has never existed at the HSV: Both are in the first division. Where we belong. It is a moment for the history books,” said the left-back, whose contract is not being extended.
With a tearful voice, she then spent the motto of the evening: “I know that we can celebrate damn well. And we will show that again today.”
HSV women are allowed on town hall balcony first
After a photo with the teams, including the supervisor and official staff as well as the politicians, the women’s team at the town hall balcony first presented the fans on the town hall market, which was immersed in the club colors black and white blue. Together, the club hyme “We are the HSV” was tuned off.
Goosebumps on the pitch, where fans had gathered since lunchtime. Some secured sought -after seats in neighboring cafes and restaurants. “Never more-second league” chants and well-known party songs such as “Sweet Caroline” drain the party community.
Teams celebrate tens of thousands on a party tour for the Innenalster
After the celebrations in the town hall, the teams climbed two double-decker buses. With the party trucks, on which “Hamburg is blue and white black” in large letters, the teams set out to go a tour around the internal altest. There were also crowds.
At short after 9 p.m. the trucks arrived again at their starting point. The official part of the celebration was over for the players. The party continued on the streets. The fans just didn’t want to let him go, the day that nobody will forget to keep it with the HSV.
Grandma Eva: “One of the most beautiful moments in my life”
“This is one of the most beautiful moments in my life. There were many ups and downs, but that I can experience this here, I think that extends it with me for a few more years,” Eva Stahl told NDR. The 87-year-old, better known in fan circles than “Grandma Eva”, has had a permanent ticket for 30 years.
The sprightly pensioner was not allowed to celebrate a title with her favorite club during this time. But this ascent felt like a Champions League triumph for her and many other HSV supporters in the second division after seven years of suffering in the second division …
