A farewell round of Ángel Correa at the last home game of Atlético Madrid caused irritation at his club. A reaction followed a day later.

For ten years, Ángel Correa wore the jersey of the Spanish top team Atlético Madrid. On Sunday, the Argentinian played his last home game for the “Rojiblancos” in the 4: 1 against Betis Seville – at least according to his own understanding.

Following the game, in which Correa achieved the final time in added time, the 30-year-old went on a round of honor through the Estadio Metropolitano, emotionally said goodbye to the fans in the arena. Correa later confirmed on social media what had already become obvious shortly after the game.

“Today I played my last home game in this jersey that I love so much. It was not a day like any other, but full of memories, emotions and gratitude,” wrote Correa on Instagram. He thanked the club, his teammate and fans. The supporters always had the feeling that he belongs. “I will keep every applause, every ovation and every moment in my heart. I will always be grateful for everything I have experienced at Atléti. Thank you for everything,” Correa concluded his clear statement.

The problem: The future of the offensive player in reality is that unclear as Correa, as Correa had clearly announced its farewell. Atlético Madrid, the farewell tour of the world champion was apparently not well received at all. Until then, nothing seemed to have known about his planned departure.

Accordingly, the association was forced to publish a statement as a player. In it, Atlético made it clear and emphasized that Correa was still under contract until June 30, 2026. “So far, no association has contacted our club to take negotiations on a possible transfer of the Argentine international,” it said, and indirectly ruffled his own star.

At the same time, the club also made it clear what significance Correa had had for the club so far. He had completed the sixth in the club history, scoring 88 goals. “A brilliant career that the association will appreciate at the end of the contract or in the event of a change to another club.”

Correa changed from Argentina to Madrid in 2015. In 2018 he won the Europa League with Atlético, in 2021 he won the Spanish championship title with the club. With Argentina, he triumphed at the World Cup in Qatar in 2022.
