The fire on the cargo ship was discovered yesterday afternoon around 5 p.m. A few hours later, an NL-Alert was sent because the smoke pulled over the city. People in the area then received several NL-Alerts.

‘No increased concentrations’

The fire brigade announced that many reports were made of worried residents. They indicated that they were stuffy, some also spoke of a chemical air. Measurements from the fire brigade showed that there were no raised concentrations of toxic substances in the smoke.

Complex commitment

According to the fire brigade, extinguishing the fire was a ‘complex bet’. With boats and ladder cars, fire extinguishing water was sprayed on the fire in the ship. In addition, cranes were used to bring out (burning) scrap. That scrap was then extinguished on the side or, if it was not on fire, to be sure.

The cargo ship was divided into various compartments, so that it was previously expected that not all the scrap in the ship had to be put on the side. Later it turned out that the fire had been transferred to a second compartment.

The fire brigade also wanted to empty compartment, but the heat were weakened and closed due to the heat. The scrap that lay there can no longer be reached.

Extinguish

For a moment it was expected that the fire would only be out tomorrow morning, but just before 8 p.m. the fire brigade confirmed that the cloud of smoke has disappeared. “The fire brigade has stopped extinguishing and is now looking at how the situation is developing.”
