Karla Spagerer remained loyal to SV Waldhof Mannheim for many decades. Most recently, she was increasingly involved in society – and received a special honor in 2022.
SV Waldhof Mannheim mourns the loss of a formative personality in his club history. Karla Spagerer, wearer of the Federal Cross of Merit and politically committed contemporary witness from National Socialism from Mannheim, died on Friday at the age of 95.
This was announced by the third division soccer team on Friday. The Kurpfälzer explained that you say goodbye to his “Waldhof legend” with great grief. “Karla was not only part of the history of our club-she was the heart and soul of the Waldhof family,” wrote the SVW about the wife of the former SPD member of the SPD member Walter Spagerer, who regularly visited the club’s home games until old age.
After the death of her husband in 2016, she began talking about her childhood in the Nazi era. At schools and events, she reported on the political persecution of her family under National Socialism.
Even in old age, Spagerer was socially committed. In January 2024, she spoke publicly for the nationwide demonstrations against right -wing extremism. As early as 2022, she received the Federal Cross of Merit for her commitment. In the same year it sent the SPD to the Federal Assembly for the election of Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
Mannheim’s mayor Christian Specht (CDU) called her a “passionate fighter for our democracy, a proud Waldhöfer and a great personality. For many years she has kept alive with her very personal reports.” At the last game of the season with Arminia Bielefeld on Saturday (from 1.30 p.m. in the live ticker at T-Online), the SV Waldhof will appear in honor of Spagerer with a funeral flor.
