Alexander Zverev also fails at the Masters in Italy in the quarter -finals. The German struggles with himself. Shortly before the French Open, its shape is worried.
No consistency, no defense and no statement in the run-up to the French Open: tennis star Alexander Zverev received the next deep strike at the ATP Masters in Rome and missed the semi-finals. The 28-year-old experienced a playful relapse against the strong Italian Lorenzo Musetti-6: 7 (1: 7), 4: 6 it was said after a faulty quarter-final game from the German perspective.
Top Ten player Musetti, who has now won three out of four duels with Zverev, meets top star Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals. Zverev, on the other hand, missed the important endurance test against the Spaniard in front of the sandplace Grand Slam in Paris, where he is targeting his first major title from May 25th. In addition, the Rome winner of the previous year will have to give his second place in the world rankings to Alcaraz from Monday.
“It is fantastic. This full stadium is a great advantage for me, I felt the energy from the first point,” said the powerful Musetti afterwards: “I wanted to make it complicated for Sascha, it worked out very well.”
Zverev initially caused a certain disillusionment among the Italian audience. The Hamburger started the late -evening floodlight game in a highly concentrated manner and quickly took its surcharge from the local hero. However, the clever Musetti caught itself in the middle of the first set, pushed the Germans into the defensive and initiated a break festival at the end of the round, at which Zverev left several set balls. In Tie Break, the world ranking tennis showed itself from its best side and took Zverev completely apart with sometimes fantastic stops.
In front of the eyes of ex-football world champion Mats Hummels, who had taken a seat again in Zverev’s box, the frustrated Hamburger grumbled over the quality of the balls in the second set. That didn’t help his game. Zverev continued to produce too many avoidable mistakes and the ripped off Musetti used its few chances freezing cold. After 2:16 hours he converted the match ball.
In addition to Hummels, whose contract expires at AS Rome in summer, 22-year-old Serie-A professional Edoardo Bove also stopped by the tournament. Bove has a Neapolitan father and your German mother and is also under contract with AS Rome. However, the team -mate of the German defender is currently borrowed to AC Florence.
