The FISU World University Games on the Rhine and Ruhr and in Berlin will be a central sporting event of the summer. Here is all information about the major event.

For twelve days, students from all over the world compete against each other for twelve days from July 16 to 27 and are likely to ensure a special flair in the Ruhr area and in the capital. WDR and ARD will report on the competitions.

What are the FISU World University Games?

As the second largest multi -port event after the Olympic Games, the organizer, the International University Sports Association (FISU), is advertising its World University Games. They were still called summer universes by 2021. 8,500 athletes from up to 150 countries compete against each other in 18 classic sports.

Who broadcasts the Fisu Games live?

Many competitions are shown live on WDR television and in the livestream on sportschau.de. In the first weekend in the ARD sports show in the first running, summaries. These can of course also be found on Sportschau.de – just like current reports and information.

What sports are there?

Competitions take place in 18 Olympic and a Paralympic sport. Due to the FISU, predetermined core sports are badminton, basketball, archery, fencing, device gymnastics, judo, athletics, rhythmic sports gymnastics, swimming, taekwondo, tennis, table tennis, volleyball, water polo and water jumping.

Additional sports selected from the organizer are beach volleyball, rowing, 3×3 basketball, 3×3 wheelchair basketball. For the first time, a Paralympic discipline is also represented.

What is the schedule?

The games begin on Wednesday, July 16, with the opening ceremony in the MSV Arena in Duisburg and the volleyball tournament. They end on Sunday, July 27, with athletics, rowing and the closing ceremony in the Duisburg-Nord landscape park.

Where do the University Games 2025 take place?

The host is the Rhein-Ruhr region in North Rhine-Westphalia together with Berlin. The participating cities in the Ruhr area are Bochum, Duisburg, Essen, and Mülheim an der Ruhr. Düsseldorf was deleted for cost reasons, but Hagen and Berlin jumped in as so -called partner cities.

What do the tickets cost?

A so -called Ground Pass, which offers access to all competitions, costs 79 euros for adults. Day tickets for Berlin, Essen and Duisburg as well as for the Lohrheidestadion in Bochum are available for 13 euros, the volleyball and basketball competitions cost 18 euros.

Who can participate?

Students who are between 18 and 25 years old on the last day of the event year and who have received a nomination from their university sports association.

What sporty value do the University Games have?

The organizers promise world -class levels and refer to Olympic champions and other well -known athletes who were there with past editions. For example, the former art gymnast Fabian Hambüchen also won gold at the 2015 Summer University a year before his 2016 Olympas victory in Rio de Janeiro.

Have the games ever taken place in Germany?

Yes, in 1989 Duisburg stepped in as an organizer. Sao Paolo was originally planned in Brazil, but had to withdraw at short notice for financial reasons.
