The ESC 2025 has started: On Tuesday evening (May 13th) the first one went in the St. Jakobshalle in Basel Semi -finals over the stage. 15 nations competed against each other, ten made the leap into the final.

Sweden, Norway and Iceland all secured a place in the final. Ukraine can also look forward to participating in the final – just like Poland, the Netherlands, Estonia, Portugal, Albania and San Marino.

Five nations, on the other hand, had to say goodbye: Croatia, Cyprus, Belgium, Azerbaijan and Slovenia did not make it into the final.

The rules at the semi -finals

In the semi -finals of the Eurovision Song Contest, only the spectators decide by voting – after all acts have occurred by televoting. Juries are not used here. A new regulation has also been in effect since 2023: the so -called “Big Five” – ​​i.e. Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy and Spain – and the host country already present their contributions during the semi -final.

ESC 2025: Information on the second semi -finals and the final

The second semi -finals of the ESC 2025 will take place on Thursday, May 15th at 9 p.m., the grand finale will increase on Saturday, May 17th at 9pm.

Protests in the run -up to the ESC 2025

In the run-up to the first semi-final of the ESC 2025, Pro-Palestinian protests occurred in Basel: During the opening ceremony on May 11th, demonstrators accompanied the move in the 37 delegations to the fair with “Free Palestine” calls, banners and trill pipes. Bowing stations occurred, especially when the Israeli delegation arrived. The group “Escalate4Palestine” had called for protest in advance and called for Israel’s exclusion from the competition. According to the police, the demonstration was peaceful, but led to increased safety presence.
