Apenrade (dpa-Afx)-The first large electric Methanol complex in the world has been put into operation near the German-Danish border. The Energy Energy Energy company officially opened the Kassø plant in the Danish Apenrade in the morning. The customers of the green methanol first include the three Danish large corporations Maersk (AP Moeller – Maersk AS (B)), Lego And Novo Nordisk before the operators also want to open up other markets such as those in Germany.
E-Methanol is almost CO2-neutral and is a promising possibility in shipping to replace fossil fuels such as ship diesel or heavy oil and thus reduce emissions. However, its production with the help of the so-called power-to-X technology needs a lot of electricity from renewable sources, which is why the fuel is currently still scarce.
Electricity from the largest solar park in Northern Europe
In Apenrade (Aabenraa), this electricity is said to come from the nearby Kassø solar park, the largest solar park in Northern Europe. This is intended to generate around 32,000 tons of e-methanol each year. The plant, which, according to the operator, is the world’s first of its kind to produce e-methanol on a commercial scale, is able to generate 42,000 tons annually.
The green methanol from Apenrade is first used by Maersk to drive the container ship “Laura Maersk” operated with methanol. E-Methanol should also be used in the plastic and chemical industry, for example, where methanol based on fossil burners has so far been standard. In the long term, it should also lead to fuel for aircraft./TRS/DP/Men
