On Sunday afternoon around half past three, no one gave a penny for the opportunities of PSV on a new national title. But since the spectacular second half of the Eindhoven players against Feyenoord and the no less surprising defeat of Ajax against NEC, all PSV people dream of the championship again. Club icons Willy and René van de Kerkhof have also almost sold the skin, while the Amsterdam bear has not yet been shot.
“Ajax was so terribly bad, they won’t save this anymore,” says René. Brother Willy adds: “We are going to pump up the tires of the flat cart.” Nevertheless, the brothers realize that Ajax is still on pole position stands. “That one point that they grabbed deep in injury time against Sparta may have been very important,” says René in the Willy and René Podcast of Omroep Brabant.
“But I don’t think they will make it. And that’s a good thing. The worst team of the Eredivisie would be the champion.” Of course René exaggerates a bit here, but Willy does agree with him. “It is a shame that PSV is under Ajax, but they are there.”
The brothers can understand that Ajax has started to mess in recent weeks. “They are now in the same curve as we have been in,” says Willy. “And unknowingly it plays a role that they can be champion. Everyone says to those players:” If PSV loses from Feyenoord we can become champions. “They are confronted with the championship everywhere and that may have been their big disadvantage.”
“If I was Noa long, I would have done exactly the same.”
The fact that PSV was able to keep full pressure on PSV is largely due to the outblinker Noa Lang who, according to both brothers, played great. The fact that for a long time his two goals got his gram at the Feyenoord audience, they thought they were no more than logical. “If I was long, I would have climbed the goses on the gates,” René knows for sure. “He was whistled and scolded throughout the game. I had done the same thing!” As a footballer, Willy was put together differently. “Long is one Enfant terrible And that was René too. I didn’t do it myself, but I understand it very well. “
In the last two games, PSV remains nothing but to win from Heracles and Sparta yourself and then hope that Ajax will still be wasted points. The brothers expect the latter. “Of course Ajax can still set up, but I don’t see that happening,” says René. “It would not surprise me if PSV even becomes champion with a few dots.” For Wednesday, René predicts a 1-0 win from FC Groningen on Ajax, while Willy keeps it 2-2. “It will be a great ending with two games in four days. Delicious!”
