Russians who own weapons from the summer of 2022 will have to notify the Russian Guard in the event of their loss or theft. This must be reported “no later than 24 hours” from the moment of loss.
Amendments to the federal law “On weapons”, which contains this rule, were signed President Vladimir Putin on June 28, 2021. They come into effect one year later.
“The person who legally possessed it is obliged to immediately, but no later than 24 hours, inform the territorial body of the federal executive body authorized in the sphere of arms trafficking about the loss or theft of weapons <...>,” the document says.
Authorities tightened control over civilian weapons following the shooting at school # 175 in Kazan. Then 19-year-old former student Ilnaz Galyaviev shot nine people, including seven children, and wounded more than 20. Galyaviev acquired a gun legally and had a license to own a weapon. He is now in custody.
