For many years he was notorious for his risky maneuvers in the ring and beyond. Now Sabu has died. Many wrestling stars take part.
Wrestling legend Sabu is dead. The long-time star of wrestling organizations such as Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW), World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) or Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA) died at the age of 60. On Sunday, this first reported the specialist magazine “PW Insider”. A cause of death is not yet known. It was not until mid -April in Las Vegas for “Game Changer Wrestling” the last match of his career.
Sabu, born in New York as Terry Brunk, was the nephew of the Lebanese-born wrestling legend Ed “The Sheik” Farhat. He embodied a wrestler of oriental origin, and his ring outfit was also an oriental. He borrowed his ring name the Indian acting legend Sabu (among other things “the jungle book”).
With spectacular maneuvers and partly brutal matches, in which chairs, tables and other objects were used, Sabu rose to the wrestling star at ECW from 1993. Even without presence at the popular WWE (then WWF) or World Championship Wrestling (WCW), he achieved enormous celebrity among fans. His nickname: the “Homicidal, Suicidal, Genocidal, Death – Defying Maniac”.
His matches became stylish for the industry, which towards the end of the 90s a fragradent, non -youth -free, riskier image. So he and ECW indirectly shaped the legendary “Attitude era” of the WWE, in which there were no longer just “good” and “evil”, but also curing antiheroes that rebelled against the establishment.
It was not until 2005 that Sabu even debut himself in the WWE after she wanted to revive the ECW set in 2001. There he met known stars like John Cena or Rey Mysterio-for many fans dream matches. But in the more compatible WWE, the idiosyncratic star never really got to develop. After his WWE-out in 2007, Sabu was still in the ring for numerous small organizations, but had a appearance for the WWE competition “All Elite Wrestling” (AEW) in 2023.
Away from the ring, Sabu – also a result of his daring match – had persistent health problems and tried to combat them with drug use. In 2021, his partner, ex-wrestler Melissa Coates, died of the consequences of a Covid 19 infection.
His death was now absorbed in the wrestling. His long -standing companion Rob van Dam only posted a index finger, Sabus iconic gesture on Twitter.
Bully Ray, who, like Van Dam, was one of the ECW stars, like Van Dam for many years, also commemorated his former colleague: “Quiet in peace, Sabu, and thank you for being the pioneer and author of the table match.”
