A little more than a month before the start have deteriorated the chances of a successful European Championship for Germany’s basketball players. Satou Sabally will not be there.
The 27-year-old wants to fully WNBA-Season with your new club Phoenix Mercury Concentrating and therefore canceled the German Basketball Bund. First, the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” had reported on the not unexpected cancellation of Sabally. Star player Sabally had played for Germany at Olympia in Paris.
“We had some conversations with Satou and of course we would have loved to have a team. Ultimately, we respect your arguments and your decision”said DBB Vice President Armin Andres. “Nevertheless, we will go to the European Championship with a very strong team.”
WNBA champions
Unlike Satou Sabally, her sister Nyara Sabally and Leonie Fiebich plan to be there at the European Championship from (18th to 29th June). The two WNBA champions of New York Liberty but will only come to the team shortly before the tournament start, since the WNBA does not take a break because of the European Championship.
National coach Lisa Thomaidis gathers her team around May 25th. The Canadian nominated 16 players for the start in Bamberg. At the preliminary round in Hamburg, Germany meets Sweden (June 19), Spain (June 20) and Great Britain (June 22). The final round then takes place in Piraeus.
