Two game days before the end, the top of the 2nd Bundesliga is closer to the top. The question arises as to who has the momentum in the final sprint on his side.

There is often talk of momentum in the language of sport. The Duden describes the word as a correct and suitable moment or time, the Latin speak of the duration of a movement and the athletes of a psychological advantage.

In the 2nd Bundesliga, in which everyone can beat everyone and in which things are closely at the top as below, a look at the momentum could help with the question of who in the end is probably ahead.

Hamburg has match ball against Ulm

Let’s try it and let’s start with the promotion candidates. On the one hand we would have the Hamburger SV. The team of coach Merlin Polzin has only scored seven points in the recent five games, but is still in first place.

The 4-0 victory last weekend at Darmstadt 98 was clear, and despite all the inconsistency, it is quite clear to the “red pants” that they are adding to Ulm next Saturday (8.30 p.m.). Then the Bundesliga promotion in the seventh attempt would be perfect.

Cologne relies on Friedhelm Funkel

The 1. FC Köln is not so shaped. Five points from the youngest five games are not enough in terms of ascent. Now the Cologneers are a special case. They pulled the ripcord in the final sprint, separated from coach Gerhard Struber and got Friedhelm Funkel, who is now supposed to get the team back on track.

Elversberg has been unbeaten for six games

SV Elversberg, on the other hand, is full in the target. The third in the table has been unbeaten for six games. The advantage: Unlike the competitors, any advancement of the promotion is vehemently denied there.

Elversberg leads a number of seven teams that are still fighting for third place. SC Paderborn (fourth place, undefeated for three games) and the Karlsruher SC (ninth place, for five games) have been cooked again. While Paderborn is still fully in the race, the KSC will catch up with four points behind Elversberg.

Elversberg coach Horst Steffen

The sixth Fortuna Düsseldorf is also good. The Rhinelander have not lost in five games, but most recently there were three draws in a row. For the 1. FC Magdeburg (fifth place), on the other hand, the youngest 0: 5 clap against Prussia Münster could have been a real goal.

And there would still be the 1. FC Kaiserslautern (seventh place) and Hannover 96 (eighth place). Both have recently caught up in April after a series of defeats, but it gets extremely scarce for both, because they are dependent on the competition.

The momentum lies with the top three

So much speaks for the top three when it comes to momentum. For Hamburg, because it finally has to work there and the “red pants” against Ulm have a match ball. And also for Cologne, which is not due to the latest results, but to Friedhelm Funkel. Above all, for SV Elversberg, who is currently simply playing well, not talking about the climb and also has the best goal difference from all the teams that are still struggling for third place.

Braunschweig with winning streak, Münster with a winning victory

The momentum also applies in the relegation battle. A whopping six games is now unbeaten in Eintracht Braunschweig and has thus moved to 15th place. Big hopes of being able to leave relegation place 16 after the 5-0 victory in Magdeburg under the new coach Christian Pander also makes Prussia Münster.

Schalke and Fürth rely on new trainers

Speaking of new trainers. With Jakob Fimpel, they also exist at FC Schalke and with Thomas Kleine in Fürth. Despite the latest bankruptcy series, both are supposed to keep the relegation on the last two match days.

Is Ulm’s big moment at HSV?

Even with the penultimate from Ulm it could be something with the momentum. To do this, the “Spatzen” would only have to screw up the climb to Hamburger SV and then win the basement duel against Münster.
