Arsenal trainer Renée Slegers from Someren-Eind is very successful in England. The 36-year-old former international has been nominated as a trainer of the Arsenal women for the title ‘Manager of the season’ in the Women’s Super League (WSL). And later this month she and her club are in the final of the Champions League.
The Brabantse will hear at the end of May whether her nomination actually yields a title. Her competitors are Sonia Bompastor (Chelsea), Marc Skinner (Manchester United), Dario Vidošic (Brighton & Hove Albion) and Rehanne Skinner (West Ham United).
Top club
Slegers has been working at Arsenal since September 2023. First as an assistant trainer, but more than a year later she became an interim head coach as a replacement for Jonas Eidevall. At the beginning of this year it was announced that she was head coach in London. With Arsenal she is second in the WSL at a large distance from champion Chelsea. Manchester United follows Arsenal at a point.
The best crowning this season can be a win in the Champions League. Arsenal will be in the final against FC Barcelona on 24 May. In the semi -final, the team of Slegers won surprisingly against the French club Olympique Lyon.
Sweden
As a youth player, Slegers was also active at Arsenal for a year. Then she left for Willem II where she reached the first team. After Tilburg, she played football for years for the Swedish clubs Djurgårdens and Linköpings. A cruciate ligament injury took care of the end of her career in 2016. In total she played 55 times for the Dutch national team.
In the Scandinavian country she started her trainer career at IF Limhamn Bunkeflo, after which she got a chance at Topclub Rosengård. She combined that with a role as national coach of Swedish women under 23 years of age. Her next adventure became Arsenal, where she stands out for good performance.
