The former rally world champion and father of the F1 Carlos pilot has confessed to Motorsport.com his intention to apply for the presidency of the FIA: “Guido for over 40 years and this sport has given me everything. This possibility has been in my mind for some time, but now I think it could be the right time to take this step”.

The presidential elections are scheduled for December 12 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The president Ben Sularyem seems to want to present himself for a second term. Carlos Sainz Sr explains his intentions: “I am confident that I can do a good job and to be able to put together an excellent team to return to this sport a part of what has given me. I am sure I can bring new and interesting ideas, to strengthen and develop motorsport and the world of car”.

And to the question if the presence of the son could constitute a sort of conflict of interest, he replied like this: “I have a curriculum and people know me well enough to know that this will not be a problem. Obviously, I will have to do aside as regards my role with Carlos and his career, but it is absolutely not a problem,” he told Motorsport.com. “He is no longer a child, he has been in F1 for a decade now and we both know that if I go on with this project, our relationship will obviously change. The FIA is a very serious entity and there will be no conflict”. And finally: “I lived the other side of motorsport and I know how important it is to listen to everyone: pilots, teams, fans, organizers, promoters, the social side, the manufacturers. I really think I can make this relationship more fluid and solid. I would like the future of the FIA to be that of a truly appreciated and respected entity by everyone”.
