Lena Oberdorf was still unable to celebrate a comeback after her cruciate ligament tear. It will soon decide whether she will go to the EM.
In the question of a possible European Championship nomination from Lena Oberdorf, a decision is imminent. This was explained by Bianca Rech, director of the women’s department at FC Bayern, during a digital media round. “In the next two weeks we will make decisions in which direction it goes, together with Lena,” said Rech.
The Bundesliga club is in close exchange with the German Football Association and national coach Christian Wück, who will announce his squad for the National League games against the Netherlands and in Austria on May 20. Rech expressed understanding that Wück desire a fit Oberdorf. “She is a top player,” she said, referring to the European Championship in Switzerland (July 2 to 27).
After her cruciate ligament rupture last summer, however, Oberdorf “did not play football for a year,” said Rech. It is crucial in which role the midfielder could be available. “The question is: what does she drive for? What role will she have in a team? We will discuss this together,” she said. A European Championship participation only makes sense if the player is physically ready. “In the end, none of us would be good at letting Lena Oberdorf drive to an EM.”
Therefore, it is important to close the player closely into the decision. “It is important to take her on board, because in the end she is the one who will ultimately decide whether it is capable of it and in whatever role,” Rech continues. The final EM squad will be presented on June 12th, a week later the preparation begins in Herzogenaurach.
