Basketball Bundesliga club Rasta Vechta has been looking for a successor to coach Martin Schiller. For the coming BBL season, Christian Held takes over the office of the Austrian who is moving to the USA.

The 36-year-old’s commitment announced the Lower Saxony on Tuesday. Held signed a three -year contract. Marius Graf and Miguel Zapata will assist him. “We are very pleased that we were able to sign a trainer with Christian Held who absolutely corresponds to our requirement profile. After two years in the EasyCredit BBL, we are also concerned with establishing us in the league,” said sports director Gerrit Kersten-Thiele.

Great success with the Rostock Seaawolves

Held had recently coached Vechta’s northern rival Rostock Seawolves. With the Mecklenburgers, he was eliminated as a trainer last year after 118 games. Held had led the Seawolves to the BBL in 2022 and qualified for the Europe Cup with the club two years later. Now the native of Aachen wants to shape an era in Vechta.

“With the way that Rasta has taken in recent years, I can absolutely identify myself. In Vechta, everything is highly professional. You are relating to promoting and integrating young players, but still has the ambition not only to play but also want to achieve something. That suits 100 percent and I look forward to starting,” said the 36-year-old.

Schiller changes to the USA

At Rasta, Held inherited Schiller, who had only started the office on Pariser Strasse last year. The Austrian moves to the University of Utah after the end of the season to the US college league NCAA. Schiller, who once started his coaching career at TSG Bergedorf in Hamburg, is currently fighting with the Lower Saxony for moving into the play-offs.
