Still unclear where residents end up

It is unclear whether the inhabitants of the thirteen apartments will again live in Heerhugowaard. “We’re going to see what is available and they are going to offer it,” says a spokesperson for the housing association. “We are in Alkmaar and Dijk and Waard, so it will be in that region. Perhaps they will all come to Heerhugowaard.”

The residents of the remaining 53 homes in the apartment complex are expected to go back home in five to six weeks. According to Woonwaard, that time is needed for other repairs in the building. “There are still many things that have to happen.”

For example, the mechanical ventilation in the building must be cleaned, new smoke detectors will be installed and all doors are replaced. “They were all kicked in by the fire brigade and those were tailor -made doors,” the spokesperson emphasizes. “Because of the long delivery time, that will take a while.”

Last week it was announced that the custody of the 19-year-old main suspect has been extended by three months. The boy is suspected of having caused the explosion and the fire in the apartment complex. The explosion would not be an attackthe Public Prosecution Service said earlier.
