Bitter setback for Leonie Märtens: An injury crosses the 21-year-old’s plans.

The German swimmer Leonie Märtens will not be able to qualify for the World Championships in Singapore, which started on July 27th. The 21-year-old, who had won eighth place over 1,500 meters of freestyle at the Olympic Games in Paris last summer, did not yet do a World Cup standard in the previous qualification period.

The German Championships in Berlin on May 1st would have been the next chance for the qualification. But Märtens had to cancel the competition. The reason: a medium -handed break.

The injury suffered her in a competition in her domestic Magdeburg Elbe swimming hall. There she completed a competition last Saturday and had fallen unhappily after her race over 400 meters freestyle. Märtens already underwent an operation, but the season went for her. She said to the swimming portal “Swim+more”: “Everything went well, that’s the most important thing. I don’t let myself be put down by this setback.”
