The Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) has almost finished improving the living conditions for the five hundred people who are taken care of in the Expo Hall in Assen. Measures have been taken against noise, for better food and for more privacy, especially for women and children in emergency shelter.

The noisy sleeping quarters in the hall have been replaced by room material rooms, without a ceiling. According to the COA, that was not possible due to fire safety. Instead, there is a sound -damping net above each compartment.

“The noise is a lot less, you can hardly hear the ambient noise of the open stretch of the hall here,” says location manager Klaas van der Veen. “The walls of the rooms are three meters high and insulated, so that the residents have more comfort in their bedroom.”

The departments for women and families with children are better separated from the parts where single men stay with four meters high walls. The different groups can thus be separated more from each other than before.
