Zoo Wildlands is still in the dark about which predator two penguins has killed. The mammals were attacked in their stay in the night from Sunday to Monday.

To find out the perpetrator, extra wild cameras were placed this week. One at the place where the predator probably came in and a camera for a better overview of the penguin stay. Those cameras were read this morning, but no predator appeared. “So we have no idea yet,” says plant and animal coordinator Henk Kuiper of Wildlands.

The animal park from Emmen is studying whether the injuries of the penguins can indicate a main guy. With one of the killed animals, the head was bitten off. “It could be a fox or marten, or maybe a wild cat,” thinks Kuiper. “The penguins stay in the water at night and during the breeding period also in nest boxes. They would be an easy prey there if a predator arrived.”

The scenario in which a predator gains access to an animal park rarely occurs. A dead penguïn was once found in Wildlands, but it is uncertain whether he was a victim of an attack.
