The new coach of the VfL Wolfsburg football players is an old acquaintance: According to the agreed media reports, Stephan Lerch will be on the sidelines of the Bundesliga club again from the coming season.
For Lerch it is a return to an old place of work. The 40-year-old had already coached the VfL women for four years from 2017 to 2021. He was the predecessor of Tommy Stroot, who surprisingly resigned from his office in early April. Until the end of the current season, Sabrina Eckhoff will take care of the team as a chief coach.
Seven titles under Lerch
From July, Lerch will be responsible for the Wolfsburg women again, who will remain without title for the first time since 2012 in the current season. The new, old chief coach knows how to win this: VfL women celebrated the championship under Lerch in 2018, 2019 and 2020 and won the DFB Cup four times (2018 to 2021).
Lerch is currently working as a sporting director at TSG Hoffenheim, but will not extend his expiring contract there. The 40-year-old switched from Wolfsburg to Kraichgau in 2021. Initially, he worked as a coach of the U17 and the U19 in the men’s area before taking over the TSG women in a double role in March 2023 as a coach and sporting director. He gave up the coaching job last summer, Theodoros Dedes followed him.
