Where is swimming?

In the 21st year in a row, the swimming and jumping hall in the European Sportpark became the epicenter of German swimming for a few days this week. Not only once Stefan Raab and his celebrities jumped down when jumping tower, there were also more important world records.

Franziska van Almsick, Britta Steffen and Paul Biedermann – they all and many others in the Berlin pool, which is considered the fastest all over Germany, have new best times. They were cheered by around 2,500 fans in the ranks of the swimming pool.

Which big names swim with?

The currently biggest name, which will hall through the swimming pool on the long weekend, is that of Lukas Märtens. “I have never been as motivated as now,” last year’s Olympic champion over 400 meters of freestyle, and the shape of the 23-year-old was also impressed: only a few days ago Märtens broke in 3: 39.96 minutes in 39.96 minutes, the 16-year-old world record of Paul Biedermann.

With Florian Wellbrock, a second Olympic champion (2021) is swimming in Berlin this week. The open water specialist will start in the hall, among other things, over the long 1,500 meters, trying to undercut his recent best time.

The focus of women will be in focus over the same distance. Not least because the Olympic bronze medalist from Paris, born in Berlin, once started swimming at the water friends Spandau.

Gose shares the status as a local hero this week with Angelina Köhler. The 23-year-old was not born in Berlin, but has been moving through the pool for SG Neukölln for several years. She does it with a lot of success: Köhler crowned herself in Rome as the first German swimmer since Britta Steffen over her 100 meter long paradested route last year.

Not yet a world champion, but at least European champion is the Brandenburg Melvin Imoudu. The 22-year-old from the Uckermark, who now swims for Potsdam SV, won over 100 meters (breast) in Belgrade EM-Gold last year. A few weeks later, at the Olympic Games with the ungrateful fourth place over the same distance, he narrowly missed his next big medal.

What is the athletes about?

First and foremost, of course for the titles as German masters. They should already be motivation enough for Märtens, Gose and Co. to perform in the Berlin pool. Nevertheless, there is still a small extra incentive on top: the chance of World Cup tickets.

The German championships are the last opportunity to swim so -called “standard times” for the World Cup in Singapore in July within a one -month qualification window. The results from Berlin will also play a role with a view to the division of the German seasons there.
