It is the mother of all derbies: the duel between 1. FC Nürnberg and the SpVgg Greuther Fürth. On the occasion of the 125th birthday of the club, BR24Sport illuminates the legendary Francenda of Francenders a little closer.

By Nicole Hornischer, Wolfram Porr

Nuremberg and Fürth – the two cities have been bounding directly together since 1899 and have grown together almost together, but nevertheless never merged into a city. Especially not when it comes to football. A first meeting between the 1. FC Nürnberg and SpVgg Fürth was on February 7, 1904 in a test game: the mother of all derbies was born.

FCN legend chair fauth: “just don’t together”

The rivalry between the two clubs was sealed early on. The Nuremberg goalkeeper Legend Heiner Stuhlfauth, who wore the club jersey from 1916 to 1933, remembered a train journey to a game of the national team in 1924 as follows: “And so we met in Nuremberg. The Fürther got into one of the back wagons. And when we saw it, we did not get into one of the front wagon, just so that we did not get in Fürthers have come together. “

2: 7 defeat for the club: “Win the stupid from Fürth of all people”

A 7-2 away win of the Fürther on October 1, 1956 should be remembered for a long time for the cloverleaf fans. The former Nuremberg outer runner Hans “Bumbes” Schmidt commented on the defeat as follows: “The tears stood in my eyes how they played! And of all things the stupid from Fürth win that!” The quote achieved awareness because Schmidt was the Fürther coach at that time.

Fürth dives – return as “Greuther Fürth”

With two peat festivals, the paths of the two clubs separated for a few years in the 1962/1963 season: the first leg the Nuremberg won 5: 1, the second leg in Fürth 5: 3. While the FCN was planned for the newly founded Bundesliga from the 1963/1964 season, the Fürther missed the qualification. Between 1963 and 1968 there were nine “friendly games”.

In the 1970s and 80s, the club usually played higher class. Fürth temporarily spent a shadowy existence in the fourth division. For the first meeting of the rivals under the new Fürther club name SpVgg Greuther Fürth (after the merger of the SpVgg with TSV Vestenbergsgreuth in 1996) ended 2-0 for the FCN.

While the club developed into a classic “elevator team”, which repeatedly switched and relegated and the leagues, the cloverleaf in 1997 succeeded in returning to the 2nd Bundesliga, twice (most recently 2021/22), the green-white also played one season Bundesliga. The Franzenderbys no longer took place annually, the more special these games were for fans. Both clubs are currently playing again in the 2nd Bundesliga.

A 10: 5 and a “breakdown”

The spectacle was and is usually guaranteed when the red-blacks against the green and whites are duel. Passionate, sometimes even over -it -all duels, heated sayings on the pitch and goals, goals, goals. The encounters in the current season were no exception. With 4: 0 and 3: 0, the FCN dominated both encounters and added painful defeats to the arch -rival, which should not be forgotten so quickly.

The most goal -rich game took place on October 25, 1908: In the northern Bavarian Gaume Championship, the FCN won 10: 5 at the clover leaves. The game report sheet on October 6, 1929: a total of 87 free kicks and three references were noted on this. Whereupon the press described the game as “breakdown” and “wood auction” and described it as an event, “it is best to cover two coats of Christian charity”.

So far, 274 Franenderbies have taken place. The Nuremberg won 142 times, 82 times the Fürther and 50 times the game ended. Two other games were canceled and a game of it was seen as victory for Fürth. This season the club won both duels – for the first time since 1978.
