Emery’s move is the turning point
The tactical alignments of both teams survived the half-time break. Juventus continued to struggle against two tight defenses, then tried more and more annoyed from distance. After the 1-1 draw in the first leg, the “Bianconeri” wanted to force the lead in regular time.
But Villarreal resisted and Emery sent new forces onto the field – including a key striker in Gerard Moreno who is slowly recovering from injury. The substitutions should have an effect quickly. After a duel between Coquelin and Juves Rugani, referee Szymon Marciniak rightly awarded a penalty after consulting the VAR and looking at the control monitor. With a bit of luck, substitute Moreno converted the lead for the Spaniards (78th).
The current Europa League winner followed suit seven minutes later. After a corner, Pau Torres dusted off and increased from four meters for Villarreal (85th) – the game was decided. Arnaut Danjuma made it 3-0 in added time – again from the penalty spot after a handball from de Ligt.
