Five weeks ago, the Bremeners were the worst team in the league in the design table – Werder has been replaced in four games and has real chances of Europe.
The Werder players still have to rub their own eyes when they look at the Bundesliga table. Eighth place, with three points behind the European Cup aliens. “Five weeks ago, it was difficult to foreseen that we could be in such a good situation,” amazed midfield engine Jens Stage.
It’s a season like a roller coaster ride. The Bremeners had put a complete December without defeat and hoped that they could preserve their good shape as a table seventh over the short Christmas break. But the new year started catastrophic.
Catastrophic start into the new year
From eleven games in the calendar year 2025, which Werder completed by mid-March, the team of coach Ole Werner Sieben lost-and also conceded the embarrassment in the DFB Cup against Arminia Bielefeld. Werder suddenly bobbed in twelve in the no man’s land in the table and did not know what happened to him.
But then the international break came and during this time something magical with the green and white must have happened, because otherwise this change is hardly to be explained. Werder is replaced.
Last Werder played internationally
Coach Ole Werner drives his team – because four game days before the end of the season, Werder is only three points behind sixth place.
With four victories in a row, the Bremen are suddenly the team of the hour-this balance sheet has no other Bundesliga competitor. Werder was the worst team in the league before the international break. And instead of a female whipping, the Weser is dreamed of Europe. Most recently, Werder mixed internationally in the 2010/11 season, at that time under coach Thomas Schaaf.
One and a half decades later, it is therefore better to be careful with the Bremern not to let their hopes carry away too quickly. Because even under Werner, the European dreams had burst shortly before the end. “Stay calm, don’t let yourself go”, that’s Werner’s mantra these days: “You drive with that quite well.”
Happiness is back at Werder
Werder also played a little luck in the cards that the international ranks are still tangible. Because the competition has always left chances in recent weeks. With the Bremern, the “happiness”, as Werner calls it, returned in spring, as in the victory against VfB Stuttgart with the dismissal for Nick Woltemade.
In addition, Werder has recently had staying power in the past few weeks, as with the late goal against Bochum, who gave them the last minute victory. The Bremeners are patient and fit enough to strike in the final phase of a game.
We are more patient, the team is relaxed and can concentrate on a better, second half. This is because the group dynamics are very strong and that we have confidence.

Friedl makes the difference, Burke the gates
Oliver Burke leaves Werder in summer. The Scotsman probably switches to Union Berlin.
The confidence is back with the Bremern – and captain Marco Friedl. The Austrian had been missing since the beginning of February, only after the international break was the defense chief fully in action again. And that was also urgently needed. With Friedl in the starting eleven, Werder conceded only 1.2 goals on average, without him there were 3.1 goals.
Werder has been wins since Friedl. The defense chief makes the difference with the Bremern. The numerous goals they conceded without him could no longer compensate for the strikers and offensive forces of the green-whites. Werder ran after the arrangements too often.
Werder is lucky that few players are injured. And that Oliver Burke is currently shooting the important goals. The fact that the change of Scots makes many fans angry could perhaps be uncomfortable in the home game on Sunday evening at 5:30 p.m. against FC St. Pauli. But Werner has already announced that he wants to continue to rely on the best. And the fans will surely quickly notice that they urgently need Burkes goals if the coup from Europe is actually supposed to succeed after this turbulent season.
