SG Flensburg-Handewitt celebrated a competitive victory in the fight for international places in the handball Bundesliga. The Schleswig-Holsteiners won 32:27 (18:14) against the relegation-prone TVB Stuttgart on Saturday evening.
The reigning European League winner in the table again passed his state rival THW Kiel-but only because of the better goal difference. However, in view of six points, the two north clubs no longer have any realistic title opportunities.
As in many games, it was also evident in the duel with Stuttgart why the championship is likely to be nothing for the SG this year. Flensburg appeared too uncontinent and unfocused. The spectators in the “Hell North” saw a changeable idea of their protégés, who might not have been enough against a stronger opponent.
“We kept ourselves on the plan and won it safely. All in all, these are the tasks that you have to do seriously. And that was already it today,” said district runner Johannes Golla in the NDR interview.
Cheers before the turf: Horgen extends contract
The first cheers in the campus hall already opened when the game had not yet started. Shortly before the start, the contract extension of Aksel Horgen was announced on the scoreboard. The right wing, which was switched from Bjerringbro-Silkeborg Håndbold to the SG in 2023, signed a working paper dated until 2026. The original contract of the right wing would have expired at the end of the season. The signs at Horgen had already been to say goodbye.
“Aksel has developed very well in recent months and has repeatedly recommended himself in training and games. Most recently, he showed when playing against Leipzig that he can take responsibility in a crucial situation,” explained Flensburg’s managing director Holger Glandorf. Coach Aleš Pajović also campaigned for an extension of the contract, added the former international.
Jakobsen with nine goals in half one
Against Stuttgart, the focus was not on Horgen on the plate, but on the left winger Emil Jakobsen. With three goals, the Dane had a large part in the rapid 4-2 lead of the North Germans. The Pajović team was immediately in the flow. But Stuttgart held against it, did not let himself be shaken up early and benefited from the fact that Flensburg spent some opportunities. And in cover, the SG always had problems when the TVB came across the circle.

Pajović was not happy with the idea of his team. At 11:10, the coach took a break (20th). The home side then acted more concentrated and determined. They were able to extend the lead to four goals until the break. Jakobsen with nine goals was significantly involved.
SG pulls it decisively after the break
After the change of sides, the guests were able to shorten the gap to two hits again. But then the SG increased the number of strokes and pulled to 25:19 (43.). The Stuttgart resistance was not broken. But in order to be able to give the encounter a turn, it would have been more individual class in the attack.
There, the TVB was able to develop pressure too rarely from the position attack. So the Flensburg success was no longer in danger.
