Xabi Alonso could play his fourth -last game as a coach of Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday (April 26th, 2025) at FC Augsburg. This is also due to the open interaction with each other.
A lot is reminiscent of the year 2024. Twelve months ago, Bayer Leverkusen had to deal with almost the identical questions like now – at least at a staff level. The future of coach Xabi Alonso was and is now the all outshone topic. However, there are two differences that could cause the outcome to be different in 2025.
A year ago Alonso said “No” to FC Bayern
Leverkusen was unable to confirm the outstanding pre -season. The vice championship is in order in principle, but the understanding of the long -term champion Alonso is different, he wants to win everything that he did as a player. After the Bayer Double, a season without a title for the 43-year-old is more of a disappointment. And the club now seems to be an option with which it was able to celebrate the greatest success.
Alonso had canceled FC Bayern Munich a year ago, but if Real Madrid should be needed, that’s another thing. There the former midfielder won the championship, the cup, the Supercup and the Champions League, became world and European champions during the five real years with the Spanish national team. Alonso is a club legend – and much indicates that the club wants to have the legend back.
Media: Real Madrid only wants Alonso – and it evades
Because it no longer runs under Carlo Ancelotti, it looks after a change of coach in summer – the current real coach itself has already indicated. And according to the agreed media reports, Alonso is said to be the only successor that those responsible for the royal are currently considering.
So far, Alonso himself has not made any hints, but has kept himself very covered in his statements. He evades the questions about real and his future, but also avoids a commitment to Leverkusen, where he is under contract by 2026. Apparently not anchored in this contract is an excavation clause – but the collaboration is so familiar that words that go beyond what has been written were apparently said.
Club boss Carro confirms “Gentlemen’s Agreement”
“With Xabi Alonso we have a gentlemen’s agree for his departure. If a team came in which Xabi played ourselves, we would sit down and not prevent him from”said Bayer-04-CEO Fernando Carro. The club boss also emphasized that a decision in the next few weeks, i.e. before the 34th matchday, must be made. “We won’t wait until the end of the season. We will have to decide beforehand, because this has different consequences in squad planning and in preparation.”
Sports director Simon Rolfes also announced: “A decision will soon be made. This is important for us to plan the next season. That is why there will be clarity in the foreseeable future.” In this case, the club and trainer rely on each other – and they can do that too. At least if it stays between them as it was before.
Leverkusen already creates clear conditions
Alonso, Rolfes and Carro have long emphasized how familiar their relationship is. At the moment, the fact that the Bayer CEO has made the oral agreement public and also clearly promised its trainer that he could change. Of course, some parameters such as the transfer fee would have to be right, but in principle Leverkusen will not block the way to Madrid.
Carro recently praised the relationship with the royal, with whom there could be some discussions in the next few days and weeks. As open as those responsible for Leverkusen deal with this topic, they seem to be aware of what will happen soon. Bayer and Alonso write a common story that is much more successful than they could expect – but it seems to end soon. And then you will solve it like gentlemen.
