Tears in Sint-Nicolaas Basilica for Francis: ‘This pope is forever connected to Amsterdam’

Deep sorrow in the heart of Catholic Amsterdam. Pope Francis died on Easter Monday at the age of 88 in Rome. Only a few weeks earlier he personally ratified the elevation of the Sint-Nicolaas Basilica to co-cathedral. The planned afternoon mass in the church opposite Amsterdam Central was canceled in a hurry. Hundreds of believers flowed to pray and sign the condolence register. The only thing that can be heard in the church is sobbing of grief.
