You can finally go there again, but only under supervision: the famous Land-Art Artwork Broken Circle/Spiral Hill In Emmen, made by the American artist Robert Smithson in 1971. The artwork, which was recently declared a provincial monument, is located in the former sand excavation of the De Boer firm.

The Land Art Contemporary Foundation and the Diep Arts Center in Emmen will organize excursions to this monumental artwork in the coming year. That news has reached art lovers from all over the country: the first two excursions, yesterday and today, were sold out to the last place.

“This is an iconic work within the Land-Art. It has always been my wish to see it with its own eyes. And now it is possible again. Smithson was at the start of the Land-Art in the Netherlands,” says a man from Utrecht. “Impressive and much larger than you can estimate on photos.”

Smithson wanted to make art in landscapes that were strongly affected by human intervention such as the sand excavation of the farmer. His work consists of two parts: a dyke construction in the water and a excavation on the land. On the headland there is a boulder from the ice age in the middle. From above the two forms seem to form an S together, but in fact it is a broken circle. On the land is the Spiral Hilla cone -shaped hill with a spiral path to the top.
