Fernando Morientes was very successful as a striker, and the Spaniard has been working as a radio commentator for years. He experienced a nightmare with a happy ending.

Former Spanish international Fernando Morientes has had a serious health crisis. As the 49-year-old described the radio station “Cadena Cope”, he had to spend several days in the hospital for pulmonary embolism. “I was in the hospital for five days and was fear of death,” said Morientes.

The disease triggered by a blood clot hit him unexpectedly. The clot formed in the area of the knee and finally hiked into the lungs. After a flight from Huelva to Madrid, Morientes suddenly felt severe pain in the chest – a first sign for the later diagnosed embolism.

As the reason for the health problems, the former attacker did not cite unhealthy lifestyle habits, but the high physical stress due to frequent travel.

Since moving to the commentator subject, he had been traveling regularly by plane and car – he had apparently added to him for a long time. “I don’t smoke and drink, I don’t lead a strange life, I take care of myself, do sports. I thought that couldn’t be true.”

Despite the dramatic situation, Morientes looks optimistically into the future. The doctors had assured him that he would recover completely. In the future, he wants to deal with his health more carefully – especially when it comes to traveling. From then on, he wanted to significantly reduce his travel activity and plan more specifically.

He also advises other frequent travelers for caution. People with high mobility in particular should take the dangers of thrombosis seriously. In this context, he mentioned the use of heparin, a blood -thinning medication that can prevent the formation of clots: “It is good to have heparin with him.” However, it is even better to restrict the travel activity – a resolution that Morientes has already implemented for itself.
