The former HSV players Felix Magath and Richard Golz want to run for the club’s presidency. They announced this in a joint message on Thursday. Both submitted their candidacy for the office of retiring Marcell Jansen.
Magath wants to succeed Jansen at the membership meeting of the second division soccer team on June 21. The ex-international no longer competes. The Magath team includes ex-goalkeeper Golz another size of the club. The 56-year-old could become Vice President under Magath.
HSV icons Magath and Golz apply to the presidency
Magath, goal scorer in the 1-0 victory in the European Cup of the national champions in 1983, had repeatedly been associated with his heart club in the past. Most recently as a sports board before the club chose Stefan Kuntz as the successor to Jonas Boldt.
In the past, the 71-year-old had repeatedly discussed the Hamburgers for management posts and, as a critic, performed the sporting situation of the second division soccer team. Magath, who worked as a manager, trainer and sports director after his player career, wants to put “his decades of experience in the service of the association”: “To devote this task with full concentration”, he will end his career as a professional trainer.
Most recently, he worked as a coach at Hertha BSC in 2022 – and in the relegation ensured that HSV remained second -class.
Targeted promotion of young talents at the center of the concept
Magath and Golz look back on a common past: Magath made Golz a professional at the end of the 1980s and later as a HSV coach. The goalkeeper, who had previously passed the young talent at the HSV, was in goal between 1987 and 1998 in 273 Bundesliga games for the club.
Then he was at SC Freiburg for eight years. After his active career, he worked as an assistant coach and young trainer in the youth area. He is currently active in a personnel consultancy in the sports environment and volunteered at the Hamburg league team Altona 93.
According to the announcement, the two want to campaign “for sporting competence and for the targeted promotion of young talent”. The focus of your concept is “a clear claim for performance, sporting ambition and economic foresight”. You would present your ideas more specifically after the application deadline on May 2 and the final approval by the Advisory Board of the HSV EV.
More candidates for Jansen succession At HSV
The Chairman of the Honorary Council Kai Esselsgroth and the entrepreneur Franck Ockens have confirmed their candidacy for the presidency. The applicants for the Vice-Job include beach volleyball Olympic champion Laura Ludwig as well as the previous incumbent Michael Papenfuß and Bernd Wehmeyer.
The 70 -year -old Papenfuß had excluded a candidacy for the presidency in March. A president must “represent” above all. But I want to shape a lot more – and I can do that as Vice President and Treasurer, “said Papenfuß.
