1. Jimi Hendrix. Purple Haze – The Jimi Hendrix Experience, 1967.
The reef is pure blues. The same guitar figure that Hendrix had already played as a guitarist for Little Richard and the Isley Brothers. But with “Purple Haze” he declared himself a free man. And invented a new, spiritual guitar language, which contained all poetry that enabled the studio technology at the time.
The breakthrough only occurred during overdubs. Hendrix ‘harmoniously glittering solos were edited with a scatter effect. And then reproduced at double speed. In less than three minutes he heralded a new age.
“A guitar,” said Neil Young, “you can play or transcend. Jimi gave me that.” Hendrix wrote “Purple Haze” in a London nightclub in December 1966 and recorded basic tracks two weeks later with his band The Jimi Hendrix Experience.
