The Landhuis on the Klundertseweg in Zevenbergen dates from 1811. At that time it was a country retreat of a ‘high pief’ from Belgium and his Moziekin. They regularly came to Zevenbergen by horse and wagon. For the last fifty years, the Van Engelen family has been the owner of the characteristic country house. The house and accompanying estate are now for sale for almost a million.
“It’s our parental home,” says Hella Grootjans-van Engelen. She is one of the eight children in the family. Her parents have since died and her sister still lives in the house with two sons. “We don’t want to leave it empty,” she explains. “It is an authentic and beautiful building, where we as a family have lived with great pleasure for about fifty years. It would have been nice if someone had bought it, but that was not possible.”

Unique architectural style
The characteristic building is unique in terms of architectural style, is located in 5400 square meters of nature and has a wide view. “I sincerely think it is a beautiful home. It is the most beautiful house in Zevenbergen and the surrounding area,” says Hella.
Her father died early. “My mother has always run our large family alone. At a later age she went to live in the smaller part of the house. In the larger part my youngest sister lived. It seems as if they are two separate homes, but they are not. In combination with the architectural style, each part has its privacy. In the past there was a large shed on the estate. He did not have a storm in the 1970s.”

Huis Appearance
What makes the house special? “The appearance of the house and the location in nature. You imagine yourself in the outskirts, but within ten minutes you are in the heart of Zevenbergen. You will not notice it in the garden that my mother does not notice it.”

“Whether I will miss the house? I am lucky that I live about four hundred meters away here. In terms of environment, not much changes for me. The memories are there, they will not lose them. Only the Van Engelen family will no longer live there.”
Roots
“Apart from one brother who lives abroad, we stayed close to our roots. We live in a radius of ten to fifteen kilometers from the parental home. It was special to grow up in such a place. Friends and girlfriends often came to the floor. The 26 grandchildren also regularly visited. My mother thought everything was good in the brewery.”

100-year-old chestnut tree
The 100-year-old chestnut tree that stands for the most part of the house will miss Hella. “It finishes the picture. It should just be there and should certainly not disappear.”

Last weekend it was open houses day. “Fortunately there was a lot of interest in our parental home. Hopefully the buyer is in between. Someone who attaches great importance to the authenticity of the home,” says Hella.
