At the 2026 World Cup, 48 teams will be launched for the first time. But four years later there could be more participants.

The South American Football Association Conmebol wants to contest the 2030 anniversary World Cup once with 64 teams. “We are convinced that the hundred years will be unique, because you only become 100 years old. That is why we propose to celebrate this anniversary once with 64 teams on three continents at the same time,” said Association Director Alejandro Domínguez at a CONMEBOL session.

Most recently, the President of the Uruguayian Football Association, Ignacio Alonso, had already made the proposal at a meeting of the FIFA Council to expand the field of participants once again by another 16 teams from 48 to 64 in five years. A FIFA spokesman told the Reuters news agency after the meeting that they would deal with the proposal.

As the “New York Times” reports, Gianni Infantino should not be averse to the proposal. Citing participants of the session, the newspaper spoke of the fact that the World Association “will probably be guided by financial and political advantages in the decision as well as sporty”.

Uruguay, like Argentina and Paraguay, was already awarded an opening game on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the World Cup. Then Spain, Portugal and Morocco are the co-hosts. With a larger number of participating teams, the South Americans could speculate on more games in their countries.
