ROma, 10 apr. – in an Italy that every year cries the disappearance of about 12,000 women due to breast cancer, at the Rome Convention Center The cloud The round table was held entitled How economic toxicity influences the quality of life in women with breast canceran event organized as part of the photographic exhibition of the ten -year of Women for Women Against Violence. A meeting designed to bring to light one of the most silent dimensions of the disease: the economic one.
“For 12 long years I have experienced double violence” – said Donatella Gimigliano by opening the works – “that of breast cancer that hit me and my family, and that, perhaps even more ferocious, of economic toxicity. The state, which should have protected me, did not give me breath. I tell my story to break the silence on a reality that concerns too many invisible women, leave only in the devastation ».
The economic weight of breast cancer: the expenses are not covered by the national health system
Moderated by Gianni Todini, director of AskanewsThe meeting involved representatives of the institutions, of the health, academic and financial world in a transversal and urgent comparison. Simona Loizzo, a member of the parliamentary ceiling on breast cancer, has paid attention to different aspects still neglected: “Quick access to fundamental oncological drugs, the right to reconstruction, the support for free professionals affected by cancer that are unable to access the microcredit. Too many expenses for therapy are not covered by the national health system and work is often lost. I am ready to collect concrete proposals to bring to Parliament ».
“Our institute has the primary objective of supporting women so that they can face the oncological path with confidence” – explained Valeria Victimberga, INPS general manager – “our sensitivity to oncological people is very strong, and the disease cannot become an obstacle to personal fulfillment”.
On the health front, Professor Lucio Fortunato, director of the Breast Unit of the San Giovanni Hospital, underlined that: “The disease touches deep aspects such as economic autonomy. The expenses are huge, up to 1000 euros per quarter, and 80% concern parasanitary care. 14% of patients saw their halved income. We cannot ignore this reality ».
Funding for women with oncological pathologies?
On the credit front, Riccardo Graziano, general secretary of the National Authority for Microcredit, illustrated some projects already started: “For 2 years now the Enm, and in particular the board of directors with the lawyer. Rosaria Musari, is deepening these issues to start new financing projects in favor of women afflicted by oncological pathology and financial toxicity. We want to open an operating table with the government to make these tools accessible in a short time ».
Cosimo Damiano Capolupo, deputy general manager Banca Popolare del Lazio, underlined that: “It is a form of social responsibility that can really affect”.
A strengthening of the national health system
Giorgio De Toma, Lilt Scientific Committee found that: “Instead, a decisive strengthening of the national health system is needed, with specific attention to cancer women in economic difficulty”. Antonio Tomassini, a parliamentary health initiative association, proposed: «An operating unit that keeps health and economics together with participatory decision -making tables. Regional disparities remain a serious problem ».
Francesca Rovera, principal school of medicine university of insupering, has offered an integrated clinical vision: «We must not only look at survival. The personalization of the treatment, multidisciplinarity and networking between healthcare, institutions and third sector are essential. ” To take a position, even if at a distance, is Svetlana Celli, president of the Capitoline Assembly, with a strong and decisive message: “We must intervene by offering concrete support to women who face the economic toxicity linked to the disease and act in a transversal way”.
A particularly touching moment saw all of them protagonists in an improvised flashmob, raising a simple but very powerful sign: “I am not a number”. (In collaboration with Women for Women Against Violence)
