German tennis star after defeat
Zverev self -critical: “worst phase”

It just doesn’t work for Alexander Zverev: German tennis ace disappointed again. Afterwards Zverev was his biggest critic.
Alexander Zverev had to accept a bitter setback from the ATP Masters in Monte Carlo. In his adopted home, the top seeded German had to surrender to the Italian Matteo Berrettini in the second round – despite the lead management, he lost 6: 2, 3: 6, 5: 7.
For the 27-year-old, it was another disappointing result in an already difficult phase. “The past few months have been the worst phase since my injury,” said Zverev after the match. At the French Open 2022, he suffered a serious foot injury, but then returned sharply and fought his way to second place in the world rankings.
This year the next step should follow: the attack on the top and a first Grand Slam title were the focus. But since his defeat in the final of the Australian Open against Jannik Sinner, Zverev has been looking in vain for his best form. He was only able to win six of his last twelve matches.
After the end in Monte Carlo, Zverev was self -critical. “It has always been the same story in the past few months,” he struggled. Once again, he was solely responsible for the defeat: “I am who lost the match – once again.” His level of play was “terrible”, he added, and made it clear: “But that’s just my opinion.”
