A new elephant can be admired in Zoo Wildlands since yesterday. Khin Yadanar Min, or simply Yadanar, has come from a zoo in Heidelberg, Germany.
The move of the 15-year-old Asian elephant bull went without significant obstacles. An hour after arrival in Emmen he enjoyed a first meal. In the coming weeks, Yadanar will have time to explore the outside area and get to know the rest of the elephant herd. During his exploration, visitors could already catch a first glimpse of him.
A day before the arrival of Yadanar, 27-year-old Timber walked the reverse road. Wildlands has waved him goodbye to Eindhoven Zoo. Carers of both animal parks have traveled along to guide both elephants in their new home.
Yadanar takes over the role of Timber as a breeding bull in Emmen. In the long term, this can lead to new elephants in Wildlands. The arrival of Yadanar is also not on its own, but is part of the European species of Maintenance Program (EEP). This program ensures that the elephant population in zoos remains genetically healthy and socially stable.
With the ‘elephant change’, Wildlands wants to contribute to the preservation of the endangered Asian elephant.
