Rudi Völler will remain DFB sports director until 2028

Originally, Rudi Völler only wanted to remain up to the EM 2024 DFB sports director. Now he extends his contract for the second time.
The German Football Association prematurely extended the contract with sports director Rudi Völler by two years until summer 2028. According to national coach Julian Nagelsmann, the association was also able to bind to Völler beyond the World Cup next year.
Originally, Völler only wanted to remain interim of the DFB’s home European Championships 2024, but extended in April last year until the 2026 World Cup. Now he extends his term again. He had already expressed the willingness to do this as part of the National League quarter-final games against Italy.
Previously, national coach Julian Nagelsmann had already extended his contract until the European Championship in 2028 and stated that he would be happy to receive further cooperation with Völler.
Völler says to the step: “The national team and their entire team at the DFB have grown dear to me. Of course, the exciting home European Championship, but above all, the cooperation with Julian Nagelsmann has a decisive part.”
Then he explains: “I am very much looking forward to going to the next European Championship with Julian and his team – the way back to the sporting success and to the hearts of fans in Germany. We have already made a lot of progress. But we are not yet where we want to go.”
National coach Julian Nagelsmann is also pleased about the extension: “Rudi is an enormously important caregiver for all of us in the team of the national team. As a guide, he is always there with his experience when we need him-like a father figure for the entire team. I have already emphasized how significant he personally and my decision to extend it beyond the home European EM 2028 continues. “
For DFB President Bernd Neuendorf, Völler is “a very important component” in the return of the DFB team to the road to success. “Together they sparked a new euphoria around the national team.”
The World Cup will take place in the USA, Mexico and Canada next year. The European Championship 2028 then increases in Great Britain and Ireland.
