David Lynch is dead – and even his grave tells stories how only he could have staged them. The director, known for “Twin Peaks”, “Mulholland Drive” and “Eraserhead”, died in Los Angeles in January 2025 at the age of 78. Now his last resting place was made public – and this also bears his unmistakable handwriting.
A tombstone that raises questions
Lynch’s daughter, the director and author Jennifer Lynch, published a photo of her father’s tombstone on Instagram. There is in a simple engraving: “David Keith Lynch”, followed by an enigmatic inscription: “Night Blooming Jasmine” – night -flowering jasmine.
Jennifer wrote under the photo: “Dad is at Rest at Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Visit when you can. I will be.” – An invitation to fans and companions to pay the director their last honor. The Hollywood Forever Cemetery is known as the resting place of many sizes in film history. And David Lynch fits there in a very own way.

What does “Night Blooming Jasmine” mean?
Although the exact meaning of the inscription remains open, fans speculate worldwide about their symbolism. Some remember Lynch’s earlier statements about the bewitching fragrance of the night jasmine – also known as the Lady of the Night. In one of his famous weather reports during the 2021 pandemic, Lynch said: “Now the days are getting longer and spring is just around the corner. In LA, the night -flowering jasmine will soon meet the air with its wonderful fragrance.”
A Reddit user also referred to an interview from 2016, in which Lynch spoke about Los Angeles’ DNA code ”. “If you smell the night jasmine, you can see Fast Clark Gable or Gloria Swanson.” For him, the plant seems to have been a symbol of an almost supernatural connection between the city, memory and sensory impression. Like a silent homage to the old Hollywood.
An unfinished chapter
Despite his advanced age, Lynch was full of creative plans until the end. Actress and long -time companion Naomi Watts recently reported that he was planning new projects until shortly before his death: “He was far from finished. I saw the creative fire in him.” These words give an idea of how much was still slumbering in him – ideas that may never see the light of the canvas.
