If someone is familiar with protests, it is Daryl Hannah. The actress and director and partner of Neil Young has already been arrested half a dozen times because she protested for environmental issues. With “Coastal” Daryl Hannah made a film about Neil Young and his tours. In the Rolling-Stone interview with David Browne, the filmmaker and actress gives intimate insight into the concert life of her partner. And reveals that the 79-year-old simply gives everything on stage.
“This tour 2023 was a solo tour,” says Hannah. “I have long thought that I would like to show certain aspects of how it is for him. Even friends of mine will say:” Oh, can I come to the party after the show? ” I then say: “Party? We get on the bus and go to the next city.” When people think it’s a wild party, I wanted to show how human it really is. At least for us. I wanted to show that it is very lonely and, in a way, almost a normal existence. “
“He can hardly speak”
Especially after the appearances, Neil Young is completely through. What she surprised. “I myself was quite amazed that he could almost no longer speak after a show. He is drained. He just has to sit there and stare out the window for a while to find it back into his body.”

Hannah: “He was really nervous. He also speaks about that in the film. He said:” I don’t know if I can do it. We’ll see. ” But he has obviously been making music for so many decades that it is already in his DNA at that time. So even though he was nervous, it was very natural for him to go on stage and play. It is difficult for him not to make music in any way. “
And that’s why Daryl Hannah considers a farewell Neil Young from concert life to be excluded:
“I don’t think there was any concerns that he would never go on tour again. I don’t think that is possible. He is so busy with music that I just don’t believe that there is a point that he will say:” That was it for me. ” The venues may change. I don’t know how things will develop.
