Novo Nordisk share is turning into the plus: Medicare and Medicaid’s obesity medication not covered

The decision is a blow for those Americans covered by the state health insurance programs and whose help wanted to pay for the popular but expensive medication.

However, the government left the opportunity to revise the decision later. A spokeswoman for the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) said that an expansion of the assumption of costs for the obesity medication “is not appropriate at the present time”. She said the CMS could rethink the decision after a further examination of the “potential benefit” and the “relevant costs”, including the costs for the state medical agencies.

The proposal published in November last year would have allowed Medicare and Medicaid to pay widespread medication such as Wegovy from Novo Nordisk and Zepbound by Eli Lilly for millions of insured persons suffering from obesity. A spokeswoman for Lilly said the company was disappointed with the decision. “It is not the best reading of the law and affects the access of the patients to obesity treatments,” she said.

Novo Nordisk could probably prefer Wegovy in India

According to an agency report, Novo Nordisk is considering launching its weight loss injection in India earlier than planned in order to be able to offer the US competitor Eli Lilly better. Wegovy could possibly be sold in India in the coming months, formerly than the original goal in 2026, reports Reuters, citing unnamed sources.

The Danish company, which also includes the Diabetes medication Ozempic, refused to comment on Reuters.

The Novo Nordisk share climbed 0.47 percent to 434.05 NOK.
