The first legs of the Champions League quarter-finals have been determined. In the meantime, it is also clear which referee the German games lead.
The 36-year-old from Buttikon in the canton of Schwyz has been a FIFA referee since 2015. Before he devoted himself entirely to professional football, Schärer worked as a temporary teacher and ski instructor. He had previously studied sports and geography. In the current Champions League season, Schärer already led four games-three of them with German participation.
In the group phase he whistled the duels against AC Milan (1-0) and Leipzig against Liverpool (0: 1), the 2-1 of Borussia Dortmund in Lille in the round of 16. He also whistled the UEFA Supercup final between Real Madrid and Atalanta Bergamo before the start of the season and was used twice at the European Championship 2024 in Germany.
The Norwegian Espen Eskas, on the other hand, heads Borussia Dortmund’s quarter-final first leg at FC Barcelona on Wednesday (9 p.m. in the live ticker at T-Online)-and whistles the Westphalia for the second time in this royal class season. In the away win at Sporting Lisbon (3-0) in play-off first leg, BVB had had good experiences with the 36-year-old.
For the referee it will already be the seventh Champions League game this season. BVB wants to get a good starting point for the second leg on April 15th in the Signal Iduna Park in the Olympic Stadium of Barcelona – but the previous year’s finalist faces a difficult task against the team of coach Hansi Flick.
