Pat McAfee, 37, who enjoys great popularity as an American football expert, collapsed into the distribution of rumors that had dramatic consequences at the NFL Proposal Test event.
In a live TV broadcast, McAfee started telling how “allegedly” and “according to everyone” a young player’s girlfriend had been in bed with the player’s father.
It didn’t take long for the story that had originally spread through the social platform Yik Yak was also in the message service X. Soon, other programs focusing on the US football feature were discussed on the subject. A quick snowball effect is no surprise, as McAfee’s own show, for example, has 2.5 million subscribers on YouTube.
The problem was that the subject of cheating claims representing the Mississipp University Evan Solois girlfriend Mary Kate Cornett18, says the whole case was caught in the wind.
Cornetti says he has suffered tremendously about the news of a false rumor. He had never been in public, but now he was recognized everywhere.
– I can’t walk on campus without taking pictures, my name shouted or I was told extreme vulgars, disgusting things, Cornett tells For The Athletic.
The student’s phone was also filled with messes.
Cornett announces that ESPN, McAfee and other rumor distributors are responsible for their actions.
– My life was ruined because it was talked about in the program just for the sake of attention. I have had to monitor the morning, vomit every night, and I haven’t been able to eat because I’m so worried about what is happening with my rest of my life.
McAfee and ESPN did not respond to The Athletic’s contact requests.
