Unsuccessful Bundestag candidacy

The long-time Bundesliga manager Oliver Ruhnert works again for the 1st FC Union Berlin after his failed candidacy for the Bundestag. “There is not much to say. The contract was resting. The contract is running again. He works for Union Berlin again,” said Managing Director Sport Horst Heldt in a media round. Ruhnert supports him as a chief scout in planning for the new season and is again an integral part of the club. “I am glad that Oli is by my side,” said Heldt.

The former head of the youth department of FC Schalke 04 has only worked as a chief scout since 2017 and then as a sports manager with great success for the Köpenicker. At his own request, Ruhnert took over the position of the chief scout before this season and let it rest from January 2025 to concentrate on his election campaign for the Sahra Wagenknecht alliance. After the party missed the move into the Bundestag, he had already signaled to want to return to professional football.
“Everyone knows how much I love my job in football. Of course I would like to continue to be active there,” said Ruhnert recently at “t-online.de”. “People who apply for a public mandate return to their job more often if the choice does not succeed.”
