Bayer Leverkusen struggles after the Cup on the Bielefeld Alm, especially with himself. A star moves into the spotlight after the game.
Cup madness on the Bielefeld Alm: Hundreds of supporters of the large outsider Arminia stormed the lawn after the first move into the cup final. “Berlin, Berlin, we drive to Berlin” and “Oh, how is it”, the majority of the 26,601 spectators sang, while the starring ensemble of defending champion Bayer Leverkusen watched the third division at the big trophy party.
After the Leverkusen team had opened their own fans, midfield star Granit Xhaka clashed with their own fans. Xhaka and a trailer seemed visibly upset. Both waving their fingers around each other, screaming loudly. Other fans had to intervene so that the situation did not escalate in the end.
Sports managing director Simon Rolfes later reacted to the scenes and emphasized the common feeling of disappointment: the defeat not only meets the fans, but the entire team. It was imagined very differently, he said, and added that another objective had now led to a corresponding disappointment.
“That was by far the worst game this season. We did a lot wrong. We wrapped it off,” said international Robert Andrich later in the ARD.
