After the rejection of the exhibition on the life’s work of the designer Wolfgang Joop (80) in the municipal museum in Potsdam, the show should now be seen in another place.
The retrospective will take place from October 4 to November 18, 2025 in the art space in Schiffbauergasse in Potsdam, the city announced in the afternoon.
Joop exhibition should not only show fashion
“Potsdam is my fixed point. The city inspired me, grounded, sometimes challenged and never let go,” said Joop, according to the city’s announcement. “For me, the retrospective is a look back – but also a lively dialogue with the present. It’s not just about fashion or art, but about the stories behind it: about beauty, breaks, doubts and courage.” Joop was born in Potsdam and lives in the Brandenburg capital, which he feels deeply connected.
Around two and a half weeks ago, it was said in a statement by the Joop team to cancel the show in the Potsdam Museum: “Complexity and scope when viewing his work” could ultimately not be realized due to the limited structural conditions of the museum.
Mayor: Joop belongs to Potsdam
After the agreement on another exhibition location, Potsdam’s mayor Mike Schubert (SPD) said: “Wolfgang Joop belongs to Potsdam and Potsdam. He has borne the name of our city.” It is important that the exhibition in Potsdam was shown and that the state capital could honor its world -famous son.
Works by fashion and star photographer Kristian Schuller can currently be seen in the Kuntraum Potsdam. The exhibition house shows “contemporary art of international orientation” on 450 square meters, as it says on the website.
