Rainbow trout is the Finns’ favorite fish, says Marttaliitto in its press release.
In March 2026, Martat and the fish industry company Saimaan Tuore conducted a survey in which Finns’ use of fish, attitudes, everyday obstacles and ways to increase fish consumption were investigated. 8,804 people from all over Finland answered the survey.
Nine out of ten of the survey respondents had eaten rainbow trout in the past six months.
During the six-month review period, the most popular fish choices of Finns were rainbow trout, tuna and Norwegian salmon. Every second respondent had eaten Norwegian salmon.
With the exception of rainbow trout, other domestic fish were used less frequently.
The story continues after the survey.
78 percent of the survey respondents considered being from home as an important selection criterion. Of those under 30, however, only one in five was willing to pay more for a domestic option than a foreign one. For those over 65, the corresponding share was one in three.
– Domesticity is a strong value, but for young people it is not enough without competitive prices and everyday ease, Marttoten’s household expert Niina Silander evaluates in the announcement.
More than half of the respondents considered the price to be the biggest obstacle to eating fish. Among those under the age of 30, the proportion was as much as 77 percent. At the same time, the survey showed that many respondents did not know how to estimate the price of fish at all or estimated it to be higher than it really is.

Young people eat fish less often than older age groups and prefer ready-to-use fish products in everyday life, such as frozen and canned food.
Ease is key.
When asked what would help to increase the use of fish in everyday life, 31 percent of the respondents highlighted easy ideas for everyday meals.
Martat states that change requires practical solutions.
– Simplicity is key. The results show that the consumption of fish can be increased by offering easy and everyday food recipes, says Silander.

Bake properly
Fry the salmon fillet in the pan first, skin side down, for 2–3 minutes, depending on the thickness of the fillet. Then turn the fillet. If the skin does not seem to come off the pan easily, continue frying for a while longer. Reduce the heat on the stove after turning and fry the fillet on the other side for a couple of minutes.
